It’s certainly been a busy few months in the world of Becca Storm!
Another story always seems to be taking shape, another project waiting to start, or another idea demanding my attention—and the last few months have been no exception.
The Blood That Burns Has Arrived
One of my biggest milestones has been releasing The Blood That Burns, the first book in my new Legacy of Ash and Fire series.
After spending so long developing this new world, its characters and its connection to the history and mythology that inspire so much of my writing, it was a real thrill to finally release it into the world.
And, even better, the early response has been wonderful.
I’ve already received some fantastic reviews, which is always incredibly encouraging as an indie author. There’s nothing quite like knowing that characters and stories that have lived in your head for so long are now finding their way into readers’ imaginations.
The Blood That Burns is only the beginning, too. The story will continue in Hunters of the Ashen Order, the second book in the series, which is currently keeping me very busy!
Hunters of the Ashen Order
I’ve been deep in the world of Hunters of the Ashen Order, working on the next stage of the story and expanding the series’ mythology.
This book takes the characters into some fascinating places, both literally and historically. The story moves towards Dunure Castle, drawing on the real history of Ayrshire and the people, places and events connected to Scotland’s witch-hunting past.
One of the things I love most about writing historical fantasy is being able to take something that really happened and ask:
What if there was more to the story?
That balance between historical fact, folklore, and fantasy is at the heart of so much of my writing, and Hunters of the Ashen Order lets me explore it even further.
And, of course, there are secrets beneath Dunure Castle that I’m not quite ready to reveal yet…
The Witches of Alba
I’ve also been working on something a little different.
The Witches of Alba is a new collection of short stories, planned for release next year.
These stories return to one of the themes that has inspired my writing from the beginning: Scotland’s ancient past, its folklore, its witches and the stories hidden beneath the history we think we know.
I’ve always been fascinated by the idea that history leaves behind fragments — a name, an old building, a trial record, a piece of folklore — and that a writer can take those fragments and breathe a new story into them.
The Witches of Alba lets me explore some of those ideas in shorter, standalone stories while still creating that distinctly Scottish, witchy atmosphere readers have come to associate with my books.
Paranormal in History
Another exciting project I’ve been developing is with Paranormal in History.
This is particularly close to my heart because it brings together two things I love: history and the unexplained.
The series explores some of the darker, more mysterious episodes from the past, including Scotland’s witch trials and the beliefs surrounding witchcraft, folklore, and the supernatural.
It also ties beautifully into my novels.
The historical research behind my books often leads me down fascinating rabbit holes, and the work I’ll be doing with Paranormal in History on The Witch Trail gives me another way to explore those subjects and share them with readers and viewers.
For me, the most interesting part is that the real history can sometimes be every bit as compelling as fiction. Once recorded and edited, you’ll find these episodes on Paranormal in History‘s YouTube page.
The people who were accused of witchcraft, the places where the trials took place, the beliefs of the time and the stories that have survived for centuries all provide an incredible backdrop for the worlds I create in my novels.
And Then There Are the Book Covers…
As if writing several books and researching Scottish history wasn’t enough, I’ve also been spending quite a lot of time designing book covers!
Book design has become another creative part of my work, and I’ve really enjoyed experimenting with different styles, typography, imagery and layouts to create covers that capture the feeling of a story.
That has now grown into something a little bigger.
I’ve created a new page on my website showcasing my available book cover designs for authors looking for an original cover for their book.
I know from experience just how important a cover is. It’s the first glimpse a reader gets of a story, and getting that first impression right can make such a difference.
So, if you’re a writer—or know someone who is—take a look at the new designs. You might even find the cover for your next book!
So… What’s Next?
With The Blood That Burns now out in the world, Hunters of the Ashen Order taking shape, Witches of Alba planned for next year, the work with Paranormal in History developing alongside them, and a brand-new collection of book designs on my website, I think it’s safe to say I haven’t been short of things to keep me busy!
And there’s still plenty more to come.
As always, thank you to everyone who reads my books, leaves a review, shares a post, recommends my stories or simply follows along with what I’m doing.
For an indie author, every bit of support really does mean something.
Plenty more stories are waiting to be told…
And I can’t wait to share them with you.
